Spring Refresh for a Cozy Neutral Bedroom

There’s no time like spring for a bedroom refresh. See how you can change the look and feel of your space with 3 steps: identify & eliminate visual distractions, and then update the soft stuff and lighting.

Where to start? Identify the visual distractions.

Before you can eliminate a visual distraction, you must identify them. (For me, there were two) The easiest way to identify a visual distraction is to look at your space and see where your eye gets “stuck.” That’s it. For example, this room has so many lines with the architectural shape of the attic ceiling and the beams and even the canopy bed. All the lines were a visual distraction.

The other visual distraction was the brass and metallic fabric. My bedroom had too much brass and gold and metallic in general.

Next step? Eliminate them.

In my case, that was paint. Thank goodness for the power of paint! Painting the fabric on the walls and the beams shades of the same beige tone added immediate calm to the room and minimized the distracting lines. Painting the gilded bed and some of the shiny gold hardware toned down some of the unnecessary lines.

As for the other visual distraction, it was a simple removal process. Taking out most of the gold fabric and adding a new duvet cover and shams gave it new energy.

There had been layers of gold in this room. First I removed the gold bedside lamps and the gold sputnik chandelier. Then, we painted the gold bed beige. We also painted the shiny gold hardware on the nightstands to match the metal beige bed. And finally, we removed the gold and white pillows and duvet cover.

Spring Refresh: Bedroom Update Recap

  1. Update the soft stuff: pillows, duvet cover,
  2. Update your lighting: bedside lamps and chandelier
  3. Use paint for things you can’t easily remove & replace.

I also wanted to share some of my favorite parts of our master bedroom. These large tasseled Euro shams complement the duvet cover. My lamps are from Target, and I love them!

Bedside tables with painted hardware are also great for hiding my clutter. 🙂

And then there’s this tapered chandelier. I’ve been lusting over it for years. It’s just the right amount of transitional style, and it’s all white. Huge bonus.

It’s no secret, I love decorating with neutrals.  Beige has made a comeback in fashion and in decorating for 2019. Did you see this post of our attic bedroom update from a couple of months ago? Check out the brass details and the difference it makes to add these cozy matching shams.
